Octomore 12.2 Heavily Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70cl, 57.3% ABV
Bruichladdich’s Octomore 12.2 is a super-heavily peated Islay single malt that masterfully pairs intense, structural smoke with the luscious, decadent sweetness of French dessert wine. Following the traditional ".2" philosophy of exploring wine cask finishes, this five-year-old expression is crafted from 100% Scottish Concerto barley peated to a robust 129.7 PPM, matured initially in a mix of first- and second-fill ex-bourbon barrels before being finished for 18 months in premier first-fill Sauternes wine casks, and bottled at a powerful 57.3% ABV. The nose presents a striking juxtaposition of smoldering wood smoke, earthy peat, and maritime brine melted into rich honey, orange peel, and grilled stone fruits. On the unctuous, heavily textured palate, the massive wave of peat smoke is wonderfully tamed by layers of apricot jam, golden syrup, and vanilla ice cream, balanced by a savory touch of smoked meats and white pepper. It finishes exceptionally long and warm, leaving a complex trail of cold charcoal ash, salted caramel, and a zesty lemon twist.
Bruichladdich distillery, renowned for its commitment to innovation and quality, underwent a remarkable revival in 2000 under the guidance of indie bottler Murray McDavid and later maestro Jim McEwan. Embracing experimental cask management and diverse distillation techniques, Bruichladdich has crafted both unpeated and heavily peated whiskies, including the celebrated Port Charlotte and Octomore ranges. This private cask embodies the distillery's dedication to creating rare and exclusive whiskies that cater to enthusiasts seeking unparalleled craftsmanship.
