Allt-á-Bhainne

A Modern Speyside Legacy

Founded in 1975 at the base of Ben Rinnes, Allt-á-Bhainne Distillery stands out as one of Speyside’s more modern whisky producers—a facility designed for efficiency and automation, reflecting the era's push towards innovation. Created by Chivas Brothers (then under Seagram), the distillery’s main purpose was to secure malt whisky for blends like Chivas Regal, not to bottle single malts. Its highly functional design, managed by minimal staff, set it apart from the picturesque, traditional distilleries of Scotland.

Allt-á-Bhainne’s whisky character has always leaned toward the gentle, fruity style typical of Speyside, making it a reliable building block for blended Scotch. Despite consistent production for blends, changing market conditions led to temporary closure in 2002, but the distillery was brought back online in 2005 under Pernod Ricard. For decades, the distillery operated largely in the shadows, with its spirit rarely seen as a single malt and only occasionally available through independent bottlers.

That changed in 2018, when Allt-á-Bhainne released its first official single malt, surprising connoisseurs with both peated and unpeated expressions—a rarity for Speyside. The distillery’s embrace of modernity, adaptability, and subtle smokiness signalled a new chapter, as it transitioned from a behind-the-scenes contributor to a brand with its own identity. Today, Allt-á-Bhainne continues to supply blends while its single malt gains recognition for bridging tradition and innovation, marking its place in the evolving story of Scotch whisky.
